Project Overview
Cumberland City Council engaged us to design and construct a new multi-age play space at Kulgun Park, with a clear vision: create a playground that blends into the natural surroundings while offering inclusive, engaging experiences for children of all abilities.
The brief called for a space that embraced nature play, whilst integrating with the park’s existing backdrop, and includes accessible paths and surfaces. It also required thoughtful landscaping to enhance the area’s visual appeal and maintain natural topography.
Project Design
To accommodate the natural slope of the block, the southern and western edges of the play space were retained using sandstone, blending functionality with a natural finish.
Inclusivity
In line with the Everyone Can Play guidelines, seating and a shelter were also included, providing a comfortable space for parents and caregivers to stay and supervise.
Landscaping
A nature play equipment trail weaves through the existing tree line, enhancing the park’s natural aesthetic and strengthening the connection to nature.
Concrete and rubber paths were incorporated throughout the site, ensuring accessible and inclusive connections to all key play elements.

Kulgun Park is now a vibrant and inclusive community space offering diverse play opportunities for children across a wide age range. The combination of sensory elements, nature-inspired play, and accessible pathways ensures everyone feels welcome.
